Driving License in Costa Rica
Like in most countries of the world, a visitor to Costa Rica requires a valid driving license to drive a vehicle in the country. Driving licenses issued in most countries should suffice to legally allow the visitor to drive a car during the stay.
Licenses from the home country are typically acceptable until the validity of the tourist visa, the duration of which in turn depends on the country of origin of the visitor. Generally, tourist visas are valid from thirty days to ninety days.
Longer Stay Driving License | The "Short Break" Approach
Costa Rica, gifted as it is with nature's aesthetic charms, often lures people to stay longer and extend their visits. Visitors interested in prolonging their stay often leave the country just before their visa is due to expire and then return to Costa Rica, after a period of 72 hours on a new visa.
Many foreigners use this repetitive "short break" approach to get acquainted with the environment and the legal system. Each time a visa is renewed, the visitor's driving license also becomes valid for the same duration.
Of course, one doesn't have to be dependent on the visa always. If the intention is to stay in Costa Rica for a long duration, the more sensible option would be to apply for and obtain a regular, local driving license. The process for obtaining one is very simple, though it can seem quite time consuming and slow, with the highly-probable prospect of standing in long queues!
Where to Go to get a Driving License in Costa Rica
Getting a driving license is easier for those who come from the United States and possess a valid US license. The best course to get one is to go to the MOPT office closest to the place one is staying at. For example, if you are put up in San Jose, there is a central driver's license office, located just one block away from western side of Plaza Viquez on Ave.18, where these are issued.
In addition, there are regional license issuing offices located primarily in Liberia, Limón, Perez Zeldón, San Carlos and San Ramón. Just ask any taxi driver for the driving license office in that region.
What You Will Need to Get a License
You must carry you current driver's license from your home country, if you are applying for a Costa Rican license for the first time. You must also present your passport bearing the stamp showing the date of your entry in Costa Rica and also a medical certificate of your fitness from a qualified and registered doctor. You have to pay the prescribed fee in cash.
If you know Spanish, there is nothing to it, but your knowledge of English will generally suffice.
